New not-horses

Won an auction last night for a group of Hagen-Renakers.  No horses, but there are a Mama and Papa Penguin, three Eskimos (Inuit, now, I think), and a trio of Polar Bears.

They're in pretty good shape overall.  Some crazing, Mama Penguin has a chip out of her beak, and one of the Cubs has a tiny chip on his nose.

$44 for the whole lot, so $4.50 average each.

Vintage auction score

I usually find some luck once a year at the estate sales here, but I haven't been to an estate sales since March, thanks to COVID.  But, there are other options.  Yesterday, the local consignment auction had a sale ending, and I remembered to look through the online catalog.  And, bingo, Breyers.  Listed as Breyers, of course, so there were multiple bidders.  I didn't bid on many of them, just 3 lots with Breyers and one lot of random animals that was mostly bone china horses, but a wood horse and a Hagen-Renaker Lying Foal in the mix.

Big score, and the one I spent the most on, is a glossy alabaster Semi-Rearing Mustang, with red eyes.  He's gorgeous.  There are some rubs on his mane and nose, but the black marks came off, and he's great.

Next is the alabaster Running Stallion, who is older than I am.  Lots of times you'll see something online that looks like an alabaster Running Stallion, but it's just a Unicorn that's lost the horn and beard somewhere.  This one, I'm pretty sure, is the real deal.

Third is a glossy alabaster Pround Arabian Foal, who was peeking out of a box surrounded by a doll and some kind of stuffed animal, and a lot of odds and ends.

Then, on a whim, I bid on the group of small animals, because the bay foal looked familiar.  Turns out he's a Hagen Renaker.  Of course, he's also the only one that was broken, but the piece was with him and it should be an easy fix.

Took a nice drive out this morning to pick them up, and spent a little time cleaning them when I got home.  Managed, with work, to get most of the black marks off the Mustang, so they're all gorgeous now.

Auction score

Found these thanks to a local online consignment auction.  Mostly Japanese-made ceramic, but 5 metal horses, one that seems to be plaster or chalkware, a couple of plastic, and a mystery salt shaker.

2019 Model Wrap-up

I did a little work with the model spreadsheet last night, after people on Facebook were sharing their favorite 5 models of the year.

Based on my numbers, I bought or otherwise acquired 208 models last year.  That includes
  • 12 Traditionals
  • 15 Classics
  • 3 Mini Whinnies
  • 2 Porcelain Breyers (the white Circus Ponies)
  • 2 Marx
  • 1 Gladys Brown Edwards trophy
  • 3 Hartlands
  • 1 awesome Hartland clock with horse
  • 3 CollectAs
  • 5 Lakeshores
  • and a whopping 153 Stablemates
The Stablemate flood is all because of the darned blind bags and trying to find the silver and blue Albys.  Which I finally found.  But there are 7 of the pink and green Clydes, 6 chestnut ASBs (I was trying to find a flaxen-mane variation) and a dozen each of the teal Alby and purple Magnolia.  One of the goals for 2020 has got to be thinning out the duplicate SMs, because sheesh.

Some of the highlights:

The Christmas Candy Cane

Purple unicorn, and unicorn foals

A Lakeshore Status Symbol SR

Corbin, from the Stablemate Club (can't wait to see him in a color with some face color)

Another Lakeshore SR, 1 of 4, that I got in a barter deal (i.e. practically free)

I finally got two of the Tartan Ponies from 10+ years ago, thanks to a lovely Blab member.

This year's Halloween Horse, the lovely glow-in-the-dark Samhain

The Spooky Stablemates - I got all three!

My luckiest day - I took a chance on the Stablemate Club grab bags, and got a Fylkir!  And even the color I wanted most.

Bought a lovely deco Iris, to go with the silver-bay Iris I got.

Hagen-Renaker Drunk birds SR

Found a second curio cabinet, and have it pretty full.

Lakeshore Addicts Anonymous

My "I didn't go to Breyerfest" shopping binge happened.

It all started when Cindy Neuhaus was posting about a Houdini SR of 12, in a nice glossy bay.  I resisted until gorgeous pictures turned up on Facebook.  So that happened.

And then Cindy, darn her, ran a "Breyerfest is over" sale, so I bought a chestnut RR Houdini, since they're running low and I wanted that one anyway.  Which was followed by me searching MHSP and finding the RR pinto Houdini for $45 including shipping, since it wasn't LSQ.  Since I live-show once in a blue moon, PSQ is fine, and you can't beat that price.

So yeah, my BF binge was 3 Houdinis.  For a total of 9 Lakeshores now, I think.  Five Houdinis (2 RR, 3 SR), 2 Marshalls, 2 Miz Charismas (SR and RR), and one Status Symbol (RR).

  1. Chestnut Marshall RR
  2. Houdini SR - matte silver grulla 1 of 14 by Linda Watson Gresham
  3. Miz Charisma SR - palomino tobiano  1 of 12 by Linda Watson Gresham
  4. Miz Charisma RR - bay (free from the Lakeshore Club random drawing)
  5. Status Symbol RR - bay
  6. Marshall SR - glossy silver grulla by Karen Grimm (with broken legs) 1 of 25
  7. Houdini SR - glossy bay 1 of 12 by Linda Watson Gresham
  8. Houdini RR - chestnut
  9. Houdini RR - bay pinto
First one was the Marshall I bought in 2009 at a live show.

An Estate Sale Story

The area is up to 3, I think, people who hold estate sales, and they all put pictures online, and I try to remember to check them out weekly.  Last week, one of them had a couple of Marx horses in the ad (not a big draw for me), but also the Gabriel jointed Silver and Lone Ranger.  I have, or used to have (I assume I still have him somewhere) a Silver, but thought I'd go see if the Lone R
anger doll was cheap enough to come home with me.

Unfortunately, not so much.

Somehow, the sale runners had mixed and matched the sets, in spite of doing enough research to know that the dolls and horses were from Gabriel, but that the wagons were by Marx.  The wagons actually go with the Marx horses on the other side.  Not to mention, Silver never struck me as a wagon-pulling sort of horse.  The Lone Ranger set was $175, the Butch Cavendish set (which I'd never heard of) was $150.  And the Marx horses were $15 each.  So, didn't buy those.  I didn't even go back the second day for 75%-off time to see if they'd split the sets.

On the other hand, as I walked in and saw the Marx/Gabriel sets, I spotted this guy on the top of a handful of small critters.

Only $1, and he's probably my favorite SM mold ever.  Original bay, and aside from someone getting overzealous with the dremel along his crest at the factory, only a couple of rubs.  Found a little Britains horse too, and two Hartland 7-inch TBs.  Although I just realized that the Hartlands have a distinct odor of something, I'm afraid it's cat pee, so they are in a plastic tub with some baking soda at the moment.

And then there was the cute Josef Original cat for $1.

I also remembered that where there are horse shaped objects, there may also be horse books, and looked at all the bookshelves.  Scored a pair of C.W. Anderson books, although neither have the dustjacket, and Heads Up - Heels Down is one I'm pretty sure I didn't have.

There were also a lot of ceramic deer, and after thinking about it over lunch, and being "deer pressured" by the Clinky Connection and Model Horse Liberation Front people on Facebook LOL, I went back for these.   These two are Lomonosov, made in the USSR.

And this little guy I thought was a donkey when I bought him.  By R. W. Midwinter of Benslem England.  After much consultation, consensus is that it's also a deer, although a donkey-colored one.  Other possibilities were a rabbit, or half of a pushmepullyou.

Estate sale hunting

Had some luck at the estate sales today.

The donkey, according to the sticker, is from a company called Lugenes in Japan.  Both ears and both hind legs have breaks.  One ear is very well mended, the other has a chip missing.  Well worth 50 cents though.

German shephard and puppy are Hagen-Renaker.  Paid $4 each.  GS has his paper, marked with $2.50.  Puppy is missing half his tail.
